Some Thoughts on the New England Patriots Preseason

Losing the SuperBowl has been a traumatic event in the life of many a contender; 7 of the last losers failed to make the playoffs the next year, and I don’t think any one of those has actually returned.  Goodness, look at what happened to the Raiders after losing Super Bowl XXXII.  They’ve barely sniffed a win, never mind a winning season or playoff appearance.

Here are some thoughts on the New England Patriots as we head into Game 4 of the Preseason and into the 2008 Season.

ADA and HR: Preventing A Bridge with One Ramp

Back in the day, I went to a college that overlooked a pretty major state highway. 4-lanes across, chain linked fence dividing the two sides so you couldn’t cross, major overpass directing traffic over, onto, and off of said highway. Major stuff.  But it was a hopelessly flawed bridge, with thoughtless implementation.  HR and business in general would do well to learn some of the lessons to be taught by the ADA - that may just prevent some of these flaws.

The Curious Incident Of the Poor Customer Service in the Night Time

OMG, I am absolutely beside myself. No sooner had I read an entry on customer service on Punk Rock HR, I had my own encounters. Not one but two. I’m so absolutely confounded by both examples of poor customer service, that I had to sit down and write my own entry on the matter.

A China Century: The XXIX Olympiad as Road Map

China stands to become not "A" world economic powerhouse; it stands to become THE world economic powerhouse.  The recently concluded Summer Olympic games put forth a crafted story and fascade for the rest of the world, but behind that window dressing lies some more powerful and darker truths about this would be world power.

Random Thoughts on Politics, Commercials and Sports

Some random and not necessarily connected items - anything that really just came across my mind at the moment.  We've got Political commentary, sports, advertising critiques...oh man, do we have it all here.

Beer Drinkers Who Tell Bad Jokes

Apparently if you’re a beer drinker that tells bad jokes, you’re kind of setting yourself up for one hell of a good ostracizing.

Seems that telling a bad joke in public can land you at the wrong end of ridicule and even a possible beat down.  Add to that, a Danish study that suggests Beer drinkers have worse psychological functioning and lower social status, and you’re putting yourself in pretty grave danger if you’re out telling bad jokes and drinking beer at your favorite bars' “thirsty Thursday” celebration.

Chances are, you’re not all that bright to begin with, perhaps you don't even bathe, and after you break that social contract, you may well get your drunk arse beaten.

Fishing with a Barbie Rod and Typo Eradication

I don’t fish much. Fact of the matter is that I just don’t like touching the critters: all slimy, and stuff. I don’t know how to hold them, I hate to take the hook out. All that jazz. I’m your typical Eastern Massachusetts yuppified wanna-be. If you want a real man, you check out my man hotchnuts. This is a dude that likes fish. Me? Not so much.

Gene Upshaw Dies at 63

Gene Upshaw, Executive Director of the National Football League Players Association (NFLPA), died yesterday at the age of 63 of pancreatic cancer.  His passing comes at a time of great uncertainty in the NFL and the NFLPA relationship after the owners opted out of the current collective bargaining agreement.

Is The Medal Count The Goal?

I was thinking about JC Murphy’s post from last week (“Our ADD Society”) this morning when I saw THIS article on the Boston Globe website. The Summer Olympics game happen once every 4 years. The best in the world compete in their chosen endeavor on the biggest stage possible. The culmination of a lifetime of work put on display at the highest human level.

And we concern ourselves with medal counts.

Another Trial of Being Mo

Readers of the Marketplace are certainly familiar with my notorious bouts of extraordinary incompetence.  Tonight, I have a new tribulation.  Not quite to the level of falling out of a tree with a chainsaw, but let's just say I keep finding unique and extra special ways of hurting myself.  My man Felber, has received Fantasy Sports Injuries.  Me?  I do Home Theater injuries.

Employer Communication and Employee Values

Communicating your corporate values to your employees is essential to meeting your corporate goals. That consistent, clear communication is the difference between meeting your goals and seeing a video of your employees taking a bath in the company prep sink.

A Friend Is a Friend...right?

Okay.  I'm having a real hard time understanding the anxiety around when is someone "a friend" enough to be a social networking site friend?  What difference does it make?

Pennington to the Dolphins

Now the other shoe drops, and it didn't take long.  The New York Jets erstwhile field general Chad Pennington has a new employer this evening, after having been shoved out the door when Bret Favre came to town.

Notes Preseason Game 1: Patriots/Ravens

It’s official: I’m getting old. This is confirmed today through review of the Patriots roster. Rookies coming in were born during my freshman year of high school. It wasn’t bad enough that guys my age in the league are few and far between (Brett Favre for instance), but that realization just hurts. Sorry for the side commentary, but hey – it’s my blog.   Here's some other more important, and relevant bits from last night's game.  RAVENS 16 - PATRIOTS 15.

Favre to be QB of the NYJ

The Favre to the Jets deal clearly makes the Jets the #2 team in the AFC East.  Problem is, though, they already were the #2 team in the AFC East.  This makes them a marginally better team, but it sells a boat load of merchandise.  Score one for the Jets in the cash register, but probably not on the field.

Please, Just Make It Stop...

The Simon & Garfunkel song "I Am A Rock" is a conundrum.  The narrator talks about how strong he is and how the outside doesn't affect him, "I am an Island," yet he maintains he has his books - an outside influence - to protect him.   This entry is kind of like that.

Something Big Baby!

The buzz is infectious.  It's out there.  You can feel it.  You can't escape it.  You must follow it.  It's epic.

I haven't been this excited in a long time about an opportunity.   It's rare you get a chance to build something from the ground up.  When I stumbled upon SportingNews, it was an established community.  This is different.  Way different.

Los Medias Rojas Comercian Manny

So this is how it ends for Manny Ramirez in a Red Sox uniform? Sad, but it had to happen. Too many conflicting agendas, and too much BS. 2004 saw a disgruntled Red Sox icon shown the door and the team went on to win the World Series. I think the Sox may have just sealed their fate for this season with the deal, but who knows. Perhaps they’re off to achieve great things.  All we know now is that the saga has finally concluded.

The Red Sox Don't Deserve Manny

Given my love of a well crafted double entendre, I awoke this morning to have been given a veritable feast in my honor with the latest comments by Manny Ramirez in his seemingly annual quest to shoot his way out of Boston.

“The Red Sox don’t deserve a player like me.” How’s THAT for a loaded statement?

In today's news...

...You know, I've got all the news you really need right here in nicely pre-packaged opinion.  You can go to work now and have several conversations about that which you have no idea and have an opinion on it.  We do your thinking here at Mo's so you don't have to....
